Community Outreach Coordinator

General Statement of Duties

 

Plans and implements outreach strategies in coordination with a variety of community service providers and builds partnerships with local support agencies for the benefit of the agency.

 

Distinguishing Features of the Class

 

An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing a program of activities that promote the organization. Work includes a wide variety of marketing, communications, public relations and related activities as well as contacting local medical providers, human services agencies, business, and community leaders for the purpose of promoting the Food as Medicine program.  Work also involves Spanish and English interpretation and participation in direct services. Employee must exercise independent judgment and simultaneously must consider financial, socio-economic, legal, and health variables in working with clients and partners. Work requires strong creativity, marketing skills, and the ability to organize and execute work plans independently.  Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through conferences, reports and results.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Essential Duties and Tasks

 

  • Creates a variety of contacts, events, presentations, and relationships with partners and potential partners including clinics, hospitals, and communities; creates community events such as cookouts, meal events at senior centers, etc.; collaborates with local businesses on their events and fund raising; recruits medical providers in Watauga, Ashe and Avery counties to participate in Food is Medicine Program; develops presentations to educate and recruit partners; participates as guest speaker for other agency events; develops marketing materials such as prescription pads with agency logo; works to bridge gap with Spanish speaking community.

  • Recruits program participants from underserved communities including migrant and remote communities; recruits mental health and other medical providers to provide pro-bono work, participate on Board, participate in programs, etc.; engages with other non profit agencies to coordinate services and advance each other’s missions; collaborates with various university departments such as Social Work to recruit volunteers.

  • Provides interpretation services for Spanish-English translation such as at medical providers or human services agencies for clients.

  • Works with cancer center patients on food preparation and nutrition education.

  • Invites human services organizations to make educational presentations at HHC staff meetings to enhance referral opportunities.

  • Provides information about HHC programs and activities on Facebook and other social media, newsletters, and other media.

  • Participates in partner agencies in conducting surveys of client needs.

  • Conducts client intake, client food box delivery, mobile delivery or other direct services.

 

Additional Job Duties

  • May develop Main Street Program for the Town.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of principles, practices and processes involved in community outreach and marketing.

  • Thorough knowledge of programs and resources available from human services agencies and medical providers.

  • Considerable knowledge of the application of information technology to public information, marketing, and data research including office technology and social media.

  • Considerable knowledge of HHC programs and services.

  • Knowledge of nutrition principles.

  • Knowledge of political, social and economic implications of related programs.

  • Skill in marketing and event planning and coordination.

  • Skill in public speaking, collaborative conflict resolution, teamwork and customer service excellence.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and effectively develop partnerships including building consensus among diverse groups.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community groups, partners, coworkers, and clients.

  • Ability to speak Spanish and provide translation and interpretation services.

  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and make correct recommendations for each interaction.

  • Ability to multi-task, set and follow effective work priorities and meet established deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment as needed.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of  stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.

  • Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, examine and work with maps, charts, and detailed materials, operate a computer, inspect sites, use measuring devices, to figure computations, and to read extensively.

 

Desired Education and Experience

Graduation from a four year college or university with a degree in social work, marketing or related field and experience in community outreach; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Special Requirement

Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license.
